So the exciting part about working on a 91 year old house is that every time you try to do something, you find something else broken. I spent the last two days repairing the sill plate and cripple wall under the breakfast nook. There is some very weird framing out there and I've done my best to conform what I can to modern codes.
I rented some house jacks from Central Tool Rental (great place, BTW) and lifted up the nook. And I got to frame my first wall. Not too shabby considering the sole plate is 10.5 degrees off of horizontal. Found another rotten wall too. This one was also not supported on anything (basically hanging from a joist. Nice.
Anyway, I'm building up a storm. And I'm almost ready to attach the ledgers. Yay!
In the meantime, we've narrowed down our choices for appliances and sinks. Now to get through the thousands of cabinets.

Josh, I love you man. But I am a deep shade of forest green right now. You quit a job to work on your house all summer?!? Damn you! I have a rotting porch that has been halfway through a "renovation project" for well over a year because I can't set aside time to finish it. Maybe I should quit my job to do it. Wait a minute, that's a great idea...
BTW, I was seriously considering coming to visit you and Julie next summer. But since you're living the high life right now, maybe I should make the jaunt before the work-a-day world sucks you back in.
Cool project blog Josh! I found this through Nate's site. We're thinking of buying this fall and fixing a place up, but man, your experience is giving me some hesitations! :) We're living in a place built in 1901. Ugh. I think we'll buy a newer home, if it happens. Or go with some land for now!
It's frustrating and difficult but man, i love it!
Josh:
I framed my first wall this year too, albeit on a little cabin-sauna in Alaska.... and oddly enough, I'm also taking a hiatus from the planning/engineering world.
Andrea is coming in on the 9:45pm train from Portland and I was thinking about sushi at Nijo around 10:15pm. Any interest in joining us? Hope you'll forgive the nonsequitur content of this comment, but I neglected to ask you for a nonwork e-mail address.

I sadly neglected to mention, by the way, that the nonsequitur invitation in my previous comment applies to tomorrow, Friday, July 27th.
